National Elementary Honor Society welcomes 37 high honor students at Sawgrass Bay Elementary

Hugh Hattabaugh, Chief Academic Officer for Lake County Schools, addresses NEHS students. Students at Sawgrass Bay Elementary were recently inducted into the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS).

Dr. Julio Valle, Jr., Principal at Sawgrass Bay Elementary, welcomed Hugh Hattabaugh, Chief Academic Officer for Lake County Schools, as the ceremony’s guest speaker.

“It is wonderful to look out and see such fine students setting good examples to follow,” Hattabaugh said. “It is these students that will make a positive difference in the future.”

Returning NEHS members lit candles during the induction ceremony to mark the four tenets of the organization:

·         Bayleigh Miller-Ulrich lit the candle of Scholarship, telling the inductees and audience members that academic excellence is a paramount focus that can lead to unlocking unlimited doors to the future;

·         Jason Pittman lit the candle of Responsibility, telling those present that this quality is one that determines greatness of character;

·         Sierra Poppitt lit the candle of Service, reminding all that when you find that you have specific talents, it is your civic duty to use them by donating your time to benefit others; and

·         Shanique Hinds lit the candle of leadership, attesting to the need to be a leader who is willing to listen to all points of view and set the example to be followed.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to be able to work with some of Sawgrass Bay’s finest students to guide them and watch them grow into compassionate and responsible leaders,” said Michelle Work, fifth grade NEHS sponsor. “We are looking forward to a year of tremendous opportunity and service to guide these young people toward the bright future we know is in store for them.”
