Choice and Alternative Education
The Department of Choice and Alternative Education is comprised of the offices of Prevention Programs & Alternative Education and Choice, Charter, & Community Education. Our department’s focus in the District’s Strategic Plan is to provide school-wide support for behavior and social emotional learning for all students as well as provide parents and guardians opportunities to obtain information, knowledge and skills to support their children.
The Office of Prevention Programs & Alternative Education is charged with overseeing of the District’s DJJ Residential Facility Hope Forest Academy, DJJ Transitions to and from residential programs, and the collaboration with other district departments in the preparation of the Code of Student Conduct & Policy Guide; supporting prevention initiatives which include bullying, violence, and alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; and managing the facilitation of expulsions/alternative education placements for general education students.
The Office of Choice, Charter, & Community Education is charged with oversight of charter schools, school choice options including Educational Choice and Home Education, Opportunity, Hope and Family Empowerment Scholarship programs. This office is also responsible for oversight of the Teen Parent Program and community education programs which include Behind the Wheel and Extended Learning Centers (ELC).
