Positive Alternative to School Suspension

One of the top priorities of Lake County Schools is to establish a research-based alternative to Out-of-School Suspension programs designed to address the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of our students.

As a result, a district-wide Positive Alternative to School Suspension (PASS) program has been created to combine academics, emotional and behavioral support in youth mental health,  to address the multiple needs of our students.

The Positive Alternative to School Suspension (PASS) is a multi-disciplinary approach that provides behavioral support while students maintain their current academic progress.
Our goal is to provide students with social, emotional, and behavioral strategies within a positive and proactive learning environment.

The structure of the Positive Alternative to School Suspension (PASS) Program is to support the acceptable student behavior policies and Code of Student Conduct in the Lake County School District. PASS provides and creates the conditions that reduce the potential for misbehavior through structured support to meet the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs of the students. The PASS program consists of three components:

  • Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Component
  • Academic Component
  • Resiliency Education Component

Family and Parental Involvement

Most effective discipline models call for family and parental involvement. Parents will always be notified of discipline infractions and consequences their students are receiving at school. Parents will also receive positive news when their student is meeting expectations and contributing positively to the school environment.

Placement Time Frame

Students may be assigned on a period-by-period basis or for a number of days, not to exceed ten (10) school days for any reason.
