Bullying and Harassment Law and Policy
On June 10, 2008, Governor Crist signed into law Florida Statute 1006.147 known as the Jeffrey Johnston Stand Up for All Students Act. School districts were required to develop, obtain board approval, and implement a policy for bullying and harassment. Lake County Schools developed and approved Policy 5517.01. In the 2013 Legislative Session, the Florida legislature passed, and Governor Scott signed into law, changes to Florida Statute 1006.147 - Bullying and harassment prohibited. The revised law became effective July 1, 2016. The Office of Safe Schools required the school districts to revise the current policy on bullying and harassment.
