What is Take Stock in Children (TSIC)?
Applications for the Take Stock in Children program will arrive and be ready to distribute on January 16th. If you are not familiar with this program, it is a statewide Florida scholarship program that provides students with tuition for two years to a Florida state college. Students are identified in the 8th grade, however the program starts in 9th grade and carries with them throughout high school. These 8th grade students must come from low income families. Parents must provide a copy of their tax return in order to verify this data since free and reduced lunch is no longer an option to determine selection in Lake County. Students should also have a 2.5 GPA or higher. There is a lengthy application process with includes a completed application, student essay, parent essay, as well as two letters of recommendation. Interviews are also conducted with these students by the Take Stock in Children program providers. It sounds like a lot, however, the benefits are enormous when considering they will receive a two year tuition scholarship, as well as mentors throughout high school!
