      Welcome to Kindergarten!
    2017-2018 School Year

Welcome to Mrs. Huchingson’s Kindergarten Class!

My name is Randi Sue Huchingson and I am excited to be your child’s kindergarten teacher. This is my fourth year at Treadway and my 26th year in the education field.  I graduated from Southeastern College with a degree in Elementary Education. I am happily married and have four children ages 13-23. I enjoy doing things with my family and supporting their interests.
    Class Motto:
    Every brain is amazing!

    Parent/Teacher Relationship

I believe that a good parent-teacher relationship is necessary for maximum school success. Throughout the year I will communicate with you through notes, telephone calls, the Remind app,  progress reports, report cards, and parent-teacher conferences. I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns at any time. You can call me at school (352-742-2291) ext. 7943 or through the Remind app, send me a note, or e-mail me at Huchingsonr@lake.k12.fl.us

    Parent Participation

If you would like to volunteer, and/or go to our field trip with the class, you will need to fill out a volunteer form. You can find the forms online at www.lake.k12.fl.us, then click on “Community and Volunteering”.

    School Attendance
Your child’s regular and prompt attendance at school is crucial to his/her success. I can’t emphasize this point enough!  Most Kindergarten learning activities are group-oriented and involve interaction with classmates. Therefore, it is next to impossible to make up work at home. You must send a note to school with your child if he or she has been absent. Please call the office if your child is absent for more than one day.

    Change in Transportation

If there is a change in the way your child will be going home (different bus, or if they will be a car rider) PLEASE send a note in and let me know.  I can not just take the child's word that he or she is supposed to go home a different way.  If you are going to have another person pick your child up from school, make sure you send a note to me, and that the person is on your child's pick-up list in the office. The person must be prepared to show proper identification before the school will release your child to him/her.

    Nightly Folders

I will send home a folder nightly.  PLEASE check for important information and daily behavior and RETURN this folder to school each day.  The students’ daily behavior will be marked on the calendar in the folder. Please initial the day on the calendar each night. Students must bring their backpack and their folder to school everyday.

In our class, we use a color system for behavior. The system is like a ladder. Each student will start on green, and can work his/her way up or down, according to behavior. We use the following colors:

Green— Ready to learn! Good day! Your child should be expected to be on green daily. When on green, students will earn a daily treat.
Yellow— Slow down! Poor choice are being made. No daily treat and possible “cool down” time.
Orange— Poor choices have continued. No daily treat and “cool down” time will be required.
Red— Stop! Poor choices have continued. No daily treat, “cool down” time will be required, and loss of privilege. If the behaviors continue, student may be sent to the office.

Breakfast will be served in the cafeteria from 8:00am-8:25am. Because of a grant that Lake County Schools received, breakfast and lunch are FREE for all students attending Lake County Schools. If you would like your child to purchase milk, if bringing lunch from home, or a small water bottle during lunch, you can send the money for that. If you would like to put the money in your child's account online, you can visit www.Myschoolbucks.com. I can give you your child's number that you will need. Just send me a note letting me know that you need it. If you are sending cash or check, please put in an envelope or baggie, and label it with your child's name and a description of what it is for.

We eat lunch every day, except Wednesdays, from 11:12-11:42. On Wednesdays, we eat lunch from 10:52-11:22. If you want to eat lunch with your child, you will need to come to the office, and your child will come up to the office to meet you so you can eat with him/her in the front eating area. Please see note under the "Breakfast" section about lunch money.

    What we are learning?

We build upon all of the skills that we work on. For instance, in reading, students will be tested on a set of sight words for the first nine weeks. For the second nine weeks, they will be tested on the same words, and will have more words added to their report card. Please help your child by practicing at home the skills we work on at school.

Math: We are working on identifying, writing, and counting numbers 0-10. We build the numbers in different ways. We will also practice calendar skills, shapes, and colors.

Reading: We are always working with letters and sounds, c-v-c (consonant-vowel-consonant) words, and reading. Please practice the sight words, rhyming, and letters and sounds with your child daily.

Writing: We write in our journals daily, and are focusing sounding words out, using environmental print, and illustrating our writing. Eventually, we will move to focusing on making a good sentence, including a capital letter, spaces between the words, and punctuation at the end. The students will also be working on writing all of the sounds that they hear in a word, not just the beginning sounds.

Handwriting: We work on handwriting daily to help students become more comfortable with writing the letters and number correctly. When students write letters and numbers backward, it is usually developmental, so do not be concerned with that. Please help your child practice his/her handwriting at home.

    * Please remember to send a snack for your child daily!!
    * Please put the snack in your child's backpack. If your child brings his/her lunch from home, it is better to put the snack in the backpack, so that they don't eat their snack at lunch.
    * Please check your child's folder daily. Important information goes home frequently.
    * Please initial each day on the behavior calendar stating that you looked through your child's folder.
    * Please make sure to place any notes/money in your child's folder. Please label any money with what it is for.
    * If you want to volunteer, you MUST fill out a volunteer form on the county website. After you have filled it out, email Serita Morgan at MorganS@lake.k12.fl.us to let her know that you filled it out.
