Welcome to Mrs. Heim’s 1st Grade!

I am looking forward to getting to know you and your child.

    Yellow Daily Folders

I will provide each student with a Yellow Daily Folder that will be used throughout the school year.  The front pocket will contain letters and communication from the teacher/school.  Should you need to send in any notes to the teacher or to the office, please place them in the front pocket. The back pocket will contain weekly homework assignments.  Yellow daily folders will be sent home on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights.  They are not sent home on Fridays.

Your child’s daily folder will contain a current copy of our word study/spelling list, high frequency words and oral vocabulary lists.  Please go over these words nightly.  Your child does not need to be able to spell the high frequency words but will be expected to recognize them. (See it…say it.)  Practicing weekly word lists will help your child feel very successful when the words are presented in class.  The goal is to have ownership of these words by the end of each week.  You may want to make flash cards of the words and review them often.  I suggest that you periodically review previous vocabulary words with your child.

Homework will be as follows: (All homework is due on Friday, unless marked otherwise.)

    • Decodable Worksheet – Fill in the blank & read decodable story to parents.
    • Write 5 sentences, each using at least one word from the word study/spelling list on the back of the decodable worksheet.

    • Read a book for the Reading Train.  (See details below.)

    • Math Skills Practice Worksheets – (M-T-W-R)

    • ALL homework needs to be checked & signed by you, please.

      The Reading Train

This year I want to encourage your child to read, read, read!  One way I hope to do this is with the “reading train” in our classroom.  The program works this way.  Each child has their name on a train car on our classroom bulletin board.  For each book your child can MASTER (successfully read to you with minimal assistance) you may fill out and return a “ticket” with your signature.  With each “ticket” your child will be able to get on the reading train, and will have a card with the cumulative number of books read put up on his/her train car.  Please help your child choose books appropriate for his/her reading level.  The public library can assist you in choosing books for your child, and I will also send books home to read. After your child has successfully read a book to you (that may mean re-reading the book more than once) please make up a form like the one below, or just write the information on a scrap piece of paper and send it to school the next day.  Reading train tickets may be sent in any day of the week. This will be part of your child’s weekly homework assignments.

      Reading train tickets should have:

    • Your child’s name

    • The title of the book(s) he/she read

    • Your signature
