School choice transfer application period extended
Parents will have more time this school year to apply for a transfer to a Lake County public school outside of their assigned attendance boundary.
The first open enrollment opportunity is for Lake County residents only, and it begins Feb. 1, 2018, and extends through April 30, 2018. A second opportunity, for students who live in and out of the county, will be from the first business day in June to the last business day in June, 2018.
Transfers during both enrollment windows would be effective for the 2018-19 school year. Once parents are notified they have been approved for a transfer, they will have 10 working days to complete the transfer registration process.
The two enrollment windows were approved Monday, Nov. 13, as part of a revision to the School Board’s “Student Assignment” policy. Last year, there was only one open enrollment window in Lake. Also approved as part of the policy revision is a provision that allows qualified Lake County Schools employees to request a transfer one time per school year for their children to attend any school in the district. Last year, employees could apply for transfers only to schools in the attendance boundary that included their work location.
The revision of Florida Statute 1002.31 directed each school district in the state to develop a controlled open enrollment plan that allows parents residing anywhere in the state to enroll their child in and transport their child to any public school that has not reached capacity. It went into effect starting in the 2017-18 school year.
Before open enrollment begins for next year, Lake County Schools will publish an updated list of schools that have capacity and, therefore, will accept transfer applications. Capacity can differ by grade and program. A school may have capacity but only for certain grade levels, or a school may have capacity at all grade levels but particular programs at the school may be full.
