Groveland Elementary student wins third place in National Society Sons of the American Revolution Americanism Poster Contest

On July 23rd, the National Society Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR) announced the winners of the 2018 Annual Americanism Poster Contest award following the final judging held at the NSSAR Annual Congress, in Houston, TX, from July 13 – 18, 2018.  The winners included local student, Charlotte Sandoval, Groveland Elementary.  The top winners were identified as:

  • First Place:  Student Andrew Menard, Attakapas Chapter, Louisiana Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (LSSAR).
  • Second Place:  Student Brooklyn Smith, Cincinnati Chapter, Ohio Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (OSSAR).
  • Third Place (Tie):  Student Charlotte Sandoval, Lake-Sumter Chapter, Florida Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (FLSSAR).
  • Third Place (Tie):  Student Nandini Raju, COL Aquilla Hall Chapter, Maryland Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (MSSAR).

The annual contest, sponsored and administered by NSSAR, invites all 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, depending upon which year their school teaches the history of the United States, who have an interest in the American Revolution, to enter their Americanism Elementary School Poster Contest.

A specific Revolutionary War topic is provided, with the 2018 topic being “The Battle of Pensacola.”  Step one in the process began locally with the Lake-Sumter SAR Chapter effort, led by Education Committee Chairman Ron Grove.   Thirty-six elementary schools in Lake and Sumter counties were contacted and an invitation for their students to compete in the competition extended.  One winning poster was then selected at each of the participating schools. At a monthly meeting of the Lake-Sumter SAR Chapter the winning posters were viewed, and the winning poster selected by member vote with the winner announced on April 7, 2018.

The second step involved collection of the local winning posters from the participating Florida SAR Chapters which were then transported to the Annual FLSSAR Board of Management meeting, held in Orlando, FL.  Again, the winning poster was selected by member vote and the winner identified on May 1, 2018.

The third and final step in the process involved the winning posters from each state being transported to the 128th Annual Congress of the NSSAR, held in Houston, TX, from July 13 through 18, 2018.  Following their selection process, the national winners were announced on July 23, 2018, which included Ms. Charlotte Sandoval, 5th Grade Student, Groveland Elementary as a Third Place Winner.

The Lake-Sumter SAR Chapter sponsors several youth awards programs for elementary through high school students, including posters, brochures, essays and oration, based upon historical and patriotic themes, which encourages the understanding of the efforts of our patriotic ancestors to establish this great nation.
