Florida Department of Education announces 2018 Hispanic Heritage Month art and essay contests and educator awards

Once again, Gov. Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott are inviting all Florida students to participate in the Hispanic Heritage Month logo annual Hispanic Heritage Month art and essay contests, which will be centered around the theme, "A Celebration of Innovative Hispanic-American Leaders." 

 

Students in grades K-3 have a chance to win a cash prize by submitting artwork, and students in grades 4-12 can earn a 4-year Florida Prepaid Scholarship through the essay contest. 

 

Please encourage your student(s) to take full advantage of this opportunity to enhance their appreciation for Hispanic-American History and prepare financially for their own future education aspirations.

 

ART CONTEST (Grades K-3)

Entries must be mailed to Volunteer Florida: Hispanic Heritage Month Committee 3800 Esplanade Way, Suite 180, Tallahassee, FL 32311. All entries must be received no later than 5 p.m. EST on Monday, Oct. 15. Emailed, scanned, or faxed entries will not be accepted. 

 

Winners will be notified after Oct. 22. Winners will receive a prize at Gov. Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott's Hispanic Heritage Month celebration to be held in Tallahassee. Reasonable travel and lodging expenses will be paid for the winners and one immediate family member.

ESSAY CONTEST (Grades 4-5, 6-8, 9-12)

Entries can be mailed to Volunteer Florida, Hispanic Heritage Month Committee, 3800 Esplanade Way, Suite 180, Tallahassee, FL 32311, or submitted electronically. All entries must be received no later than 5 p.m. EST on Monday, Oct. 15. Entries submitted electronically will receive email confirmation.

 

Winners will be notified after Oct. 22. Winners will receive a 4-year Florida College Prepaid scholarship provided by Florida Prepaid College Foundation. Winners will receive awards at Gov. Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott's Hispanic Heritage Month celebration to be held in Tallhassee. Reasonable travel and lodging expenses will be paid for the winners and one immediate family member.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AWARDS (for full-time educators)

Additionally, students, parents, teachers and principals are invited to nominate full-time educators in elementary, middle and high schools for the Hispanic Heritage Month Excellence in Education Award. 

 

Three winners will be slected: one elementary teacher, one middle school teacher an done high school teacher.
