Young filmmakers celebrated with the Jim Harbin Film Festival awards

The Jim Harbin Student Media Festival is in honor of Jim Harbin, a former consultant with the Florida Department of Education, who originated the idea of a statewide student media festival to recognize the excellent work being done across the state of Florida by student media producers.

Students from all over the county had the opportunity to participate and submit for the Media Festival based on their grade level and what category they wanted to represent whether it be a comedy, drama, book trailer, etc.  For each category there was specific criteria to be met.

Different district personnel met together to view the film submissions to judge.  Out of all of the submissions for the district, 6 films advanced to Regionals.  These six district winners were:

  • Grades 3-5, Instructional, Be Cool, Follow These Rules, Pine Ridge Elementary, led by Julia Juhl
  • Grades 6-8, Book Trailer, Prisoner B-3087, East Ridge Middle, led by Cathy McTigu
  • Grades 6-8, Public Service Announcement,  Buckle Up America East Ridge Middle, led by Cathy McTigue
  • Grades 6-8, Comedy, The News Central Show, Gray Middle School, led by Bridgitte Marshburn
  • Grades 6-8, Drama, Wise Words, East Ridge Middle, led by Cathy McTigue

  • Grades 9-12, Book Trailer, Pathfinder, South Lake High, led by Mary Conway

After the judging at the regional level, there are three videos, Be Cool, Follow These Rules, Prisoner B-3087, and The News Central Show that advanced to the state level for judging.  We have one state winner, who will be announced at the state award ceremony in Orlando on Oct. 23. We are excited with the submissions we have had in the 2014-2015 school year and look forward to what’s to come in the new school year.
