School Board approves calendars for 2016-17 and 2017-18

TAVARES - The Lake County School Board has approved student calendars for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 school years with an earlier start date of Aug. 10 for both years.

The District is required to develop and implement a 180-day student calendar for each school year. To comply with the requirement, a committee composed of employee representatives, parents, citizens and administrators developed two options for both years. All of the options included an Aug. 10 start date, but proposed days off throughout the years differed. Lawmakers this year agreed to allow earlier start dates so districts could end their semesters before the start of winter break and to provide more instructional time before state tests.

The options were posted on the school district’s website, and nearly 4,000 parents, students, employees and community members voted.

The approved 2016-17 school year calendar option, which drew 71% of the votes, includes these notable dates:

  • Aug. 10 – First day of school

  • Sept. 5 – Labor Day (Student Holiday)

  • Nov. 11 – Veterans Day (Student Holiday)

  • Nov. 21-25– Thanksgiving Holiday (Student Holiday)

  • Dec. 22 – Jan. 3 – Winter Break

  • Jan. 16 – Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday (Student Holiday)

  • Feb. 20 – Presidents’ Day (Student Holiday)

  • March 13-17 – Spring Break

  • May 24 – Last Day of Classes

The approved 2017-18 school year calendar option, which drew 81% of the votes, includes these notable dates:

  • Aug. 10 – First day of school
