Students at Sawgrass Bay Elementary gathered on November 12 to recognize Veterans Day with special guest Lieutenant Colonel Schuh.

To kick off the ceremony Cub Scout Pack 957 led the flag ceremony and the Pledge of Allegiance.  The ceremony continued with the “Star-Spangled Banner” led by Mrs. Smith’s Kindergarten class.  Principal Heather Gelb addressed the student body stating that, “Veterans Day is intended to honor and thank all military personnel who served the United States in all wars.  On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect.”

Assistant Principal and United States Army veteran, Dr. Kimberley Dos Santos introduced the Veterans of Sawgrass Bay.  Taking the stage to speak to the students included Mr. Batchelor (Navy), Mr. Kogos (Navy), Ms. Lee (Army), Mrs. McCullough (Army), Mrs. Williams (Marine Corps) and Mr. Simmons (Navy).  Mrs. Motyl’s Kindergarten class and Mrs. Young’s third grade class performed a special Alphabet Tribute for the veterans.

Principal Gelb stated, “It is also important to teach students that sacrifices are made for freedom.  For these sacrifices we should honor all of our brave servicemen and women who safeguard our freedom every day.  Our Veterans Day Celebration here at Sawgrass Bay helps to lay this foundational value in our students."
