State releases school grades: Lake is a 'B' district

TAVARES – Lake County Schools earned a grade of ‘B’ for the 2014-15 school year, the Florida Department of Education announced today with its release of preliminary information baseline grades. The district was previously graded at ‘C.’

In addition, eight individual schools earned As for 2014-15 and 19 earned Bs. The previous year, only six schools earned As and 10 earned Bs.

While it may seem natural to compare the 2014-15 grades to grades from the previous year, Education Commissioner Pam Stewart cautioned that the two do not allow for a true apples-to-apples comparison. The 2014-15 school year was the first year the Florida Standards Assessments (FSA) were administered, so grades from that year are considered a new starting point, with new expectations and a new school grading model, she said.

For that reason, the grades released throughout the state today do not include learning gains. Those will be included within the school grades calculation beginning with the results for the 2015-16 school year, which will be released this summer. Additionally, administration of the FSA was plagued with computer problems and other issues. As a result, the Florida Association of District School Superintendents (FADSS) asked that grades be held in abeyance or deemed “I” for incomplete.

Still, district leaders are using the release of the grades as an opportunity to praise students, teachers and administrators for their hard work and largely successful outcome.

“I am extremely proud of the work we’ve done in Lake County,’’ said Susan Moxley, Ed. D., superintendent of Lake County Schools. “Like other superintendents around the state, I have said and still maintain that we need a comprehensive review of our accountability system. But that does not take away from the commitment our district has shown to academic improvement. I applaud those efforts and I believe our students are benefiting. These grades – at least, in part – reflect the good things we are doing for students in Lake County Schools.”
