Take Stock in Children of Lake and Sumter Counties students earn scholarship upgrade

LEESBURG, FL (March 15, 2016) – Take Stock in Children of Lake and Sumter Counties awarded a scholarship upgrade to 5 of their top students in the class of 2017. The students, along with their parents and mentors, were presented their awards at the Sumter County School District Board meeting on February 16th and the Lake County School District Board meeting on March 14th.

“The upgrade is from a 2 Year Florida College Plan to a 2+2 Florida College Plan. The upgrade adds two years of tuition at a State University in addition to 2 Years tuition at a Florida College that were previously awarded to the students” said Carman Cullen-Batt, Executive Director.

Grade point average, behavior, attendance and community service hours served as the criteria for choosing the top 5 winners. Four of the winners attend a public high school in Lake County and one winner attends a public high school in Sumter County.

Take Stock in Children, a program of the Educational Foundation, identifies financially at-risk students in the eighth grade, provides them with a mentor and an advocate and then rewards them at high school graduation with a college tuition scholarship.

Local money raised for scholarships are matched 100 percent and purchased through the Florida Pre Paid Foundation.
