Take Stock in Children receives funding for scholarship and college readiness

The Wells Fargo Foundation has awarded $5,000 to the local Take Stock in Children program to purchase a 2 Year Florida College Plan Tuition Scholarship for a student in our community; also, the C. Warren Barry Foundation awarded $1,000 to the local program to assist with college readiness workshops and campus tours.

Take Stock in Children is a school-based scholarship and mentoring program, modeled to identify and provide college tuition scholarships to students who fit the financial and academic guidelines.  The Take Stock staff assigns volunteer mentors and advocates ensuring success throughout high school.  Program participants are awarded a college tuition scholarship upon successful high school graduation.

Local money raised for scholarships is matched 100 percent through the Florida Prepaid Foundation, thus doubling the impact on the community. This has allowed over 500 high school seniors to graduate with a Florida Prepaid Scholarship.

Take Stock in Children of Lake and Sumter Counties is a program of the Educational Foundation of Lake County.  For information on volunteer mentoring or becoming a donor for the organization, please call 352.787.6576, email Gail Weidner at or visit
