School Board and teachers union reach agreement on contract

TAVARES – The Lake County School Board and the Lake County Education Association (LCEA) reached agreement Wednesday, Aug. 17, on their 2016-17 contract.

Highlights include the following:
  • Raised the starting teacher salary to $40,000, and increased the salary of eligible teachers $1,500 to $2,000 depending on evaluation.
  • Employees will be able to choose from four health insurance plans. The plan with a $750 deductible has been identified as the base plan, with the School Board agreeing to pay 95% of that premium for full time employee only coverage.
  • Agreement on the Leadership Initiative for Teachers (LIFT) Talent Development Pipeline, which provides additional compensation for teachers at Title I schools, in critical shortage areas, and who fulfill certain school leadership roles.
  • Reappointments for annual contract teachers with multiple “effective” and/or “highly effective” ratings over two to four years.
  • Memorandum of Understanding on how teacher planning time can be used.

The LCEA will schedule a ratification vote on the contract, which will then be submitted to the School Board for approval.
