LAKE TECHNICAL COLLEGE: 9/11 CEREMONY

September 12, 2016– Tavares, FL – Lake Technical College held a ceremony on Thursday, September 8 at 9:00AM to honor the first responders who perished in the horrific terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. Led by Lake Tech’s Fire Academy Coordinator, Chief Ron Williams, the ceremony began with an invocation from Chaplain Stephen Griswold and was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by a new Lake Tech Firefighter recruit.

Chief Michael Swanson of the Eustis Fire Department was the guest speaker. He shared his memories of that fateful day and noted that six of the firefighters who perished were also new firefighter-recruits that were doing ride-a-longs with the FDNY that day. Chief Swanson challenged the Lake Tech’s new recruits to remain diligent in their studies and to never stop honing their skills because they never know when they will be needed. He concluded by welcoming the recruits into what he said was the best career he could have ever chosen.

Following Chief Swanson’s speech, Lake Technical College’s Firefighter recruits read the names of the three hundred and forty three fallen heroes.

Approximately 40 of Lake Tech’s Adult Education students from the main campus in Eustis attended the ceremony and then toured the Institute of Public Safety campus with the Fire Academy Coordinator, Chief Ron Williams.
