Radio system to enhance school safety

TAVARES – In an effort to enhance safety in schools, county and district officials recently approved the installation of a new digital radio system that will foster more direct communication between Lake County Schools, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office and emergency first responders.

The inter-local agreement approved in January 2015 allows for connectivity of the Lake County Schools Digital UHF Motorola System. Through a separate agreement signed in August 2015, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office’ 9-1-1 center will be able to monitor a dedicated talk group of school administrators. That agreement also will allow school administrators to contact the Sheriff’s Office and first responders directly through the radio system.
The hardware infrastructure is already in place, and the district is in the process of completing installation of the radio system in schools. The project is expected to be complete in February 2017.
Once installation is done and administrators have been trained, they will be able to switch their radios to a specified channel and connect directly to the countywide public safety network.
