Bay Elementary student leaders make toys for pets that will be adopted
students are part of a program that stresses service as a part of leadership
of the fifth-grade Student Leadership Teams at Sawgrass Bay Elementary School
brought in T-shirts recently to make dog and cat toys for the South Lake Animal
League. The students learned how to safely approach dogs they may come across
and how to protect themselves if they feel threatened by a dog. They also
learned about dog and cat adoptions from the League and the Cat Café.
Leadership Teams meet regularly as component of the schools “Leader in Me”
program, which stems from the belief that great leaders serve.
far, the teams have collected nearly $400 in dog and cat food as well as dog
and cat treats. The toys they made will go to the pet adoption agencies.
March, the students will make gift bags with decorated handles and send them to
the League so the bags can be filled with paperwork and other items people need
when they adopt the pets. They also plan to read with some of the dogs on the
