Students prepare for STEM Wars competition
The theme for this year’s competition is “STEM Wars,” and it is planned for May 8-12 at the Wesley Center, 715 W. Juniata Street, Clermont. See chart below for times.
Students in third through eighth grade will work collaboratively in teams to answer higher-order thinking questions and complete an engineering design challenge that will require the use of several 21st-century skills.
Design and build a launcher with the given materials that will successfully launch a cotton ball the furthest distance.
Materials included one plastic spoon, one roll of masking tape, six rubber bands, two foam cups, three feet of yarn, six craft sticks and two cotton balls.
And here’s a sample math question from last year:
You are offered a summer job. They will hire you for 10 days and will pay you one of three ways:
- Option A: $1.00 the first day, $2.00 the second day, $3.00 the third day and so on.
- Option B: 10 cents the first day, 20 cents the second day, 40 cents the third day, and each day twice the amount as the day before.
- Option C: $6.00 for each day for all 10 days.
Which way would pay you the most? Write your answer below. Use pictures, numbers or words to defend your answer.
The correct response is Option B with multiple ways to defend the answer.
The event is open to the public. See chart for the times of each grade level contest.
