Leesburg High Band Teacher Qualifies as Quarterfinalist for Grammy Award

Leesburg High’s very own Gabriel Fielder is one of 197 music teachers from 187 cities across the U.S. who have been named quarterfinalists for the Music Educator Award presented by the Recording Academy and the Grammy Museum.

Fielder leads the Leesburg High School band department. He conducts the jazz bands, which he revived in 2012, and two concert bands. The band program’s recognition has been steadily growing under his leadership. Now, Mr. Fielder is in the running to receive one of the highest musical honors for his influence and direction as a music educator.

The Music Educator Award, open to all current U.S. teachers, was created to recognize and celebrate music educators in k-12 and at the collegiate level who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the music education field. The award also emphasizes a commitment to the greater cause of maintaining music education in schools.

The 197 quarterfinalist will be narrowed down to 10 semifinalists and announced in September. The overall winners will be invited to attend the 60th Annual Grammy Awards and other Grammy Week events. The remaining 9 finalists will not leave the competition empty-handed. They will all receive a $1,000 honorarium and, along with the winner, will receive a matching grant for their respective school’s music education programs.
