Thanksgiving Lunch with Best Buddies

Just in time for Thanksgiving, students at Tavares High School prepared a special dinner to serve to their friends through the “Best Buddies” program.  Best Buddies is a program that fosters friendships between those who have disabilities and those who do not. Led by their teacher Ms. Vineyard, students set the tables in their classroom with placemats they decorated themselves in anticipation of their guests. When their buddies and other guests arrived, they greeted them at the door with handwrapped plasticwear and a menu to take to their table. When guests had chosen their meals from the menu, students served food and socialized while everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving lunch.

The dinner was the students’ way of thanking their buddies for their friendship and acceptance. It also served as a way for the students to practice their social skills, helping to further break through some of the social barriers that come with having special needs.
