Insight Foundation gives $2,500 to help students pass ACT

The Insight Community Foundation has donated $2,500 to the Educational Foundation of Lake County in Insight Foundation check support of the ACT Reading Prep Program, which is designed to support students who are at risk of not graduating high school because of low performance in the reading section of the required Florida standardized test. A concordant score on the ACT can substitute for a passing score on the state test and be counted toward requirements for high school graduation.

The check was presented to the Lake County School Board at its meeting on Monday, Jan. 14.

Lake County Schools is working in conjunction with the Sylvan Learning Center to develop a highly successful remedial reading program. Last year, the program included all eight local high schools and served 516 students. Eighty-three percent of the students involved in the program passed the ACT Reading.

The funding from Insight will be used to purchase student manuals, teacher lesson plans, training and professional development services.

“When the Ed Foundation is able to step up with other partners to offer programs to students to help them get that concordant score, we move more students form just walking away with a certificate of completion to a high school diploma, and there’s a world of difference with that,” School Board member Marc Dodd said after the check was presented Monday night.

The Educational Foundation of Lake County is a non-for-profit organization that is the direct support for Lake County Schools. Its mission is to serve as the connection between the community and public education, evaluating needs and securing resources to enhance the quality of education.
