Treadway Elementary teacher named Air Force Association STEM Teacher of the Year



The Martin H. Harris Chapter of the Air Force Association (AFA) has named Dr. Caryn Long, a fifth-grade teacher at Treadway Elementary School, Florida’s STEM Teacher of the Year! 


Chapter representatives came to Treadway Elementary School, 10619 Treadway School Road in Leesburg, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, to present the award to Dr. Long.


Every year, the chapter recognizes excellence in the area of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education by presenting an award to one teacher in each of five Central Florida counties – Lake, Orange, Osceola, Polk and Seminole. From the five county awardees, the chapter selects one winner to receive a cash award and compete for the association’s statewide recognition. 


Dr. Long was selected as the AFA Teacher of the Year for Lake County and the and went on to be named winner for the entire state of Florida. 


All nominees were asked to submit information about academic awards and honors they’ve earned; academic conferences and workshops they’ve attended; a narrative on their accomplishments and achievements in support of STEM, and a letter of recommendation. They could also include news articles, documents or photos showing their interaction with students completing STEM activities. Winners were selected based on the information submitted.
