Lake County Educational Choice Open Enrollment applications accepted June 1-27 for all Florida residents

TAVARES -- Any Florida resident who wants to attend a traditional Lake County public school may apply from June 1 through June 27, as long as the school has enough capacity to accept students who live outside the attendance boundary.

This Open Enrollment opportunity is being offered through the Lake County Schools’ Educational Choice program, which gives families the flexibility to send their children to any traditional public school, regardless of where in Florida they live, as long as the school has enough room and the family can provide transportation.

It does not apply to charter schools, the magnet program at Cypress Ridge Elementary School or Rimes Early Learning Center. Parents interested in enrolling their children at these schools should contact the schools directly.

The first application window for traditional public school Open Enrollment was Feb. 1 through April 30 for Lake residents only. For schools that received more applications than the number of open seats available, a random, computerized lottery was held and applicants were contacted in the order determined by the lottery. Through that process, 505 Educational Choice transfers were offered and 432 students were placed on a wait list in the order determined by the lottery.

Students who applied to schools with closed capacity – no room for out-of-zone students – were also placed on the wait list in an order determined by a random, computerized lottery. Those applicants will be notified of any openings in the order of the list.

The second application window, open June 1 through June 27, is for Florida residents in or outside of Lake County. Applications will not be accepted for schools or grade levels within a school with closed capacity. Again, a lottery will be used to determine application acceptance.
