TAVARES - The start of a new school year brings increased traffic and activity to roadways across Lake County. Beginning Monday, Aug. 10 – the first day of school in Lake – 240 school buses will transport students to and from school, joining thousands of young pedestrians, bicyclists, and families traveling during peak morning and afternoon hours. Lake County Schools is asking all motorists to do their part to keep students safe by driving attentively, following school zone laws, limiting distractions such as cell phone use, observing posted speed limits, and stopping for school buses when required by law.
Each year, school bus drivers across Florida and the nation report thousands of instances of motorists illegally passing stopped school buses. These violations place students at significant risk as they cross streets and navigate areas around school buses.
This year, Lake County school buses will be equipped with stop-arm safety cameras that help increase awareness of the critical need to stop when students are loading or unloading and promote compliance with Florida’s school bus safety laws.
From September 9 through October 9, motorists who are observed illegally passing a stopped school bus will receive a warning notice to educate drivers about the law. After October 9, violators will receive a citation from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
When a school bus stop-arm is extended and warning lights are activated, the camera system automatically detects and records vehicles that pass within the enforcement zone. Images and video captured by the system are reviewed by law enforcement before any warning notice or citation is issued.
“Student safety is our highest priority,” said Scott Pfender, the district’s transportation director. “Every day, thousands of Lake County students rely on school buses to get to and from school safely. This program is about protecting children, increasing driver awareness, and reminding everyone of the important role they play in keeping students safe around school buses. A moment of attention and patience can make all the difference.”
