CLERMONT -- East Ridge Middle School civics students recently had a unique opportunity to bring their Florida history lessons to life through the Florida Freedom Tour, an educational program provided by the Florida Department of Education.

The experience gave students an engaging, hands-on look at Florida’s history and development, from its earliest days as a Spanish colony through the growth of the modern state.

One of the educational trucks focused on Florida’s early history and statehood. Students explored displays featuring St. Augustine, the development of Florida as a state, Florida’s role during the Civil War, the impact of the citrus freeze, and the history of several of Florida’s historic colleges. Posters and artifacts helped students connect important historical events with the people, places, and industries that helped shape Florida.

A second truck highlighted the development of modern Florida. Students learned about the state’s space program, its many springs and waterways, including the Tarpon Springs sponge industry, as well as fishing and wildlife. The exhibit also explored the growth of Florida’s tourism industry, the development of major theme parks, and the state’s important role in the movie and entertainment industry.

East Ridge Middle School Principal Jamie Sidoruk shared how valuable the experience was for students.

“This was an incredible opportunity for our students to experience Florida’s history in such a meaningful and interactive way," he said. "Experiences like this allow our students to step beyond the classroom and connect what they are learning to the history, people, and places that make Florida so special. We are grateful to the Florida Department of Education for bringing this wonderful educational experience to our school and providing our students with an opportunity they will remember.”

At East Ridge Middle School, learning comes alive when students are given opportunities to explore history, ask questions, and make meaningful connections beyond the classroom. The Florida Freedom Tour provided students with an opportunity to see, explore, and connect with the stories that shaped their home state.

It was a memorable day of learning, discovery, and appreciation for Florida’s rich and diverse history.
