TAVARES – Kimberly Capstraw, the mental health liaison at Mount Dora High School, has been named the 2026 School-Related Employee of the Year for Lake County Schools.
Dr. Elizabeth Johnson, executive director of the Education Foundation of Lake County, made the announcement on Monday, December 8, at the School Board meeting. This recognition is part of the annual statewide program that honors outstanding education support professionals who make a powerful impact on students, staff, and school communities every day.
This year’s finalists included Jesi Cartagena of East Ridge High School, Terrie Burklew of Grassy Lake Elementary, and Mrs. Capstraw, who brings seven years of experience to her role. She supports students through individual counseling, crisis intervention, suicide risk assessments, and coordination with outside agencies. Additionally, Mrs. Capstraw leads the Behavior Threat Assessment Team, organizes student resiliency training, consults with families and staff, manages return-to-school meetings, and oversees programs that build student well-being.
“Mrs. Capstraw is a true pillar of our school community and one of the most impactful professionals I have had the honor of working alongside,” Mount Dora High School Principal Kyle Bracewell said. “In her role as mental health liaison, Mrs. Capstraw consistently demonstrates compassion, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of our students and staff.”
“She has an exceptional ability to connect with young people, providing steady guidance and timely support during moments when they need it most,” Superintendent Diane Kornegay said. “Her contributions extend far beyond crisis response. She cultivates trust, fosters resilience, and ensures that students feel valued, heard, and safe.”
As Lake County’s 2026 School-Related Employee of the Year, Mrs. Capstraw will be recommended for the statewide recognition on behalf of the district.
